ファンの人気投票で結果が決まる年に１度の MTV ムービーアワードが、今年からテレビシリーズ部門を増やして新たに MTV Movie & TV Awards と名前を変え、その授賞式が5月7日、ロサンゼルスの Shrine Auditorium にて開催された。
司会は『ピッチ・パーフェクト』（Pitch Perfect）のアダム・ディヴァイン。オープニングでは『美女と野獣』（Beauty and the Beast）の野獣に扮してパフォーマンスを披露した。

今年注目されたのは、これまで男性・女性で分けられていた俳優部門の性別分けが廃止となり、「俳優賞」が一本化されたこと。
俳優賞の性別分けについては先月、Showtimeの ‘Billions’ に出演するエイジア・ケイト・ディロンが、エミー賞を主催するテレビ芸術科学アカデミーに対して手紙を書き、俳優の性別分けカテゴリーに疑問を呈したばかり。
MTV Movie & TV Awards は今年初となる性別分けのない俳優賞の映画部門のプレゼンターにそのディロンを採用していた。

ディロンが発表した賞を受賞したのは、ヒュー・ジャックマンやタラジ・P・ヘンソン、ダニエル・カルーヤ、ジェイムズ・マカヴォイ、ヘイリー・スタインフェルドとともに候補になっていた『美女と野獣』のエマ・ワトソン。
ワトソンは受賞スピーチで「候補者を性別分けしない史上初の俳優賞というのは、私たちが人として体験することをどのように知覚しているかについて何かを物語っていると思います。」（The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience.）と述べた。
『美女と野獣』は映画部門の作品賞も受賞。
テレビ部門では Netflix の『ストレンジャー・シングス 未知の世界』（Stranger Things）が作品賞を、同番組に出演するミリー・ボビー・ブラウンが俳優賞を受賞した。
授賞式に先立って発表されたMTV Generation Awardは、映画『ワイルド・スピード』シリーズ（The Fast and Furious）が受賞した。
