最多12ノミネートに輝いたのは、ジョシュ・グローバンのブロードウェイデビューとなったミュージカル ‘Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812′ で、グローバンの主演男優賞の他、ベスト ミュージカル賞、監督賞、オリジナル楽曲賞、主演女優賞（デニー・ベントン）などにノミネートされた。
トニー賞で最も注目される新作ミュージカルの作品賞、ベスト ミュージカル賞に’Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812′ と並んでノミネートされたのは、映画『ラ・ラ・ランド』（La La Land）の音楽チームがクリエイターである Dear Evan Hansen と、9/11の実話に基づいた Come From Away 、1993年の映画『恋はデジャ・ブ』の舞台ミュージカル化の Groundhog Dayとなった。
ベット・ミドラー主演のリバイバルミュージカル『ハロー・ドーリー！』（ Hello, Dolly!）は、ベスト リバイバル ミュージカル賞の他、主演と助演ともに男優・女優の俳優賞４部門全てにノミネートされ、合計10のノミネートとなった。
ストレートプレイ部門では、A Doll’s House, Part 2 がベスト・プレイ賞と主演・助演の俳優賞４賞全てを含む８部門でノミネートされてトップとなった。
また、今年のピューリッツァー賞を受賞した Sweatの他、Indecent と Osloがベストプレイ賞にノミネートされている。
第71回トニー賞授賞式は6月11日にニューヨークの Radio City Music Hallで開催される。司会は俳優のケヴィン・スペイシーが務める。
