4月9日、ロンドンのロイヤル・アルバート・ホールにて、2017年ローレンス・オリヴィエ賞授賞式が開催された。
今年のオリヴィエ賞で注目を浴びていたのは、J・K・ローリングの『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズをベースに作られた２部式の芝居『Harry Potter and the Cursed Child』（ハリー・ポッターと呪いの子）。
この新作は史上最高11ノミネーションを得たことで注目を浴びていたが、9日の授賞式では新作プレイ作品賞、プレイ主演男優賞（ジェイミー・パーカー）、プレイ助演女優賞（ノーマ・ドゥメズウェニ）、同助演男優賞（アンソニー・ボイル）、最優秀演出家賞（ジョン・ティファニー）を含む９部門の受賞となり、これまでミュージカル『マチルダ』（Matilda）と『夜中に犬に起こった奇妙な事件』（The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time）が保持していた最多受賞記録を塗り替える結果となった。
『ハリー・ポッターと呪いの子』で演出家賞を受賞したティファニーは、『ガラスの動物園』（The Glass Menagerie）の演出でも候補に上がっていたが、『ハリー・ポッター』で受賞となった。
ミュージカル部門では、現在ブロードウェイでプレビュー中の『グラウンドホッグ・デイ』（Groundhog Day）が8ノミネーションを受けていたところ、新作ミュージカル作品賞とミュージカル主演男優賞（アンディ・カール）の２つの賞を受賞した。
また、『ドリームガールズ』（Dreamgirls）でエフィ・ホワイト役を演じているアンバー・ライリーがミュージカル主演女優賞を受賞した。
